SD card or card reader not working on Windows
When a memory card doesn't appear, the cause is one of three: the card, the reader hardware, or the reader's driver - built-in laptop readers (usually Realtek) often lose their driver after a Windows reinstall or upgrade and silently disappear.
Quick checks first
1. Test the card elsewhere
Try the card in a camera, phone adapter or another PC. If it fails everywhere, the card is the problem. Also check the physical lock slider on SD cards.
2. Check Disk Management, not just Explorer
Win+X → Disk Management. A card that appears there without a drive letter just needs one assigned (right-click the partition → Change Drive Letter). Explorer alone can mislead.
3. Does Windows see the reader at all?
Win+X → Device Manager. Look for a card reader entry (often Realtek Card Reader under “Disk drives” or its own section). Missing after a reinstall or upgrade - that's the driver side.
If the reader itself is missing or erroring, the next step is to identify it and install its driver - manually, or automatically if it doesn't show a usable name.
Fixing it manually
Install the card reader driver
- Device Manager → the reader (or unknown device) → Properties → Details → Hardware Ids.
- Search the ID or your laptop model in our database - built-in readers are usually Realtek (USB\VID_0BDA…) or Alcor.
- Create a restore point and install the matching driver, then reinsert the card.
Know the exact device model?
Search the card reader driver database by laptop model or Hardware ID. Review matching Windows versions and available driver releases.

That's not a driver problem - the partition has no drive letter or an unsupported format. Assign a letter in Disk Management; if the card is new or from a camera, it may need formatting (which erases it).
