Card readers drivers

Card reader drivers serve the SD slots in laptops and smart card readers. Nearly all of them are built on Realtek, Alcor Micro or Genesys chips - and after a Windows reinstall the slot often stays dead until the package goes in. The drivers here are from official sources.

About card readers drivers

The symptom is always the same: a card goes in, nothing happens, Explorer shows nothing. Device Manager meanwhile has either an unknown device or a reader with a warning icon. The Realtek Card Reader package (the most widespread) or the driver from your laptop model's support line brings the slot back.

Smart card readers - the ones for digital signatures and bank cards - are their own subspecies with their own packages: typically the Realtek USB Smart Card Reader driver or the reader maker's own.

Frequently asked questions

The SD slot does not see cards - driver or hardware?
If Device Manager shows a warning icon or an unknown device - a driver. If the reader looks healthy and the card is still invisible, test the card in another device first.
Which driver does a laptop SD slot use?
Most often Realtek Card Reader, sometimes Alcor or Genesys. The Hardware ID tells you exactly; the package from your laptop model's support line is the safest pick.
Does a USB smart card reader need a driver?
Usually yes: install the Realtek USB Smart Card Reader package or the reader maker's driver, then the software that works with the card.
