Cameras & webcams drivers

Camera drivers cover the webcam built into a laptop and external USB cameras. Most built-in cameras use sensors from a handful of makers (Sunplus, Sonix, Realtek, Luxvisions), but the right driver usually comes from the laptop brand - HP, Lenovo, Dell. The packages here are from official sources, with versions and dates.

About cameras & webcams drivers

The classic complaint is "the camera stopped working after a Windows update": Device Manager shows it, apps show a black screen. Before touching the driver, check Windows privacy settings - big updates sometimes reset app access to the camera, and then no driver is at fault at all.

If the camera vanished from the system entirely, the fix is a driver for your exact laptop model ("HP Wide Vision HD Camera" and the like). There is no universal webcam driver: modern cameras run on a common standard (UVC) that Windows supports out of the box, and the branded packages add the tuning for a specific sensor on top of it.

Frequently asked questions

The camera shows a black screen but exists in the system - is it the driver?
First check Settings - Privacy - Camera: Windows updates sometimes switch app access off by themselves. If access is on and the screen is still black, reinstalling the driver may help.
Why does my camera have a strange manufacturer name?
Laptop camera sensors are made by a few specialist firms (Sunplus, Sonix, Luxvisions) - their names are what the system shows. Look for the driver by your laptop model, not by that name.
Does an external USB webcam need a driver?
Usually not - modern webcams run on the UVC standard with Windows' own driver. The branded package adds extras: auto-framing, effects, image controls.
