Canon LBP2900 driver for Windows 11

The LBP2900 is a 2005 laser printer that still prints today, but its driver is special: CAPT, Canon's own printing technology, without which this printer does not work at all. The downloads vanished from Canon's European sites years ago, yet the official packages live on - the newest from 2017, straight from Canon's servers, and both are in our catalog. They usually install on Windows 11; the steps are below.

Why this happens

  • The LBP2900 needs its CAPT driver for everything - unlike most printers, it cannot print a single page without it.
  • Canon's European sites removed the downloads, so the usual search paths lead nowhere.
  • A big Windows update can unseat the CAPT driver, and the printer “disappears”.

Quick checks first

1Find out if your Windows is 64-bit

Settings → System → About: the “System type” line says 64-bit or 32-bit. Almost every modern PC is 64-bit. The driver comes as two separate packages, so this decides which one you take.

2Rule out paper and toner

Blinking lights mean paper or the cartridge. A quiet printer with a steady power light after you send a page - that is the driver case.

The fix is the official CAPT package for your Windows type - the pages below lead to both, on Canon's own servers.

Fixing it manually

Install the CAPT package

  1. Download your package from the catalog: 64-bit (released 2017) or 32-bit (2015).
  2. Run the installer first, and connect the USB cable when the installer asks - with CAPT the order matters.
  3. Print a test page.

If the printer disappeared after a Windows update

  1. Reinstall the same package. CAPT is sensitive to major Windows updates, and a clean reinstall usually brings the printer back.
  2. If it still refuses: unplug the printer, remove it in Settings → Printers & scanners, reinstall the package, reconnect.

Know the exact device model?

Search the catalog by the model - LBP2900 - or by the Hardware ID from Device Manager.

The model name is on the label on the printer's casing. Over USB it also reports a Hardware ID - the code that names it precisely (Device Manager → Properties → Details → Hardware Ids).

Try for example: LBP2900 · read the Hardware ID guide · or browse the driver category

Frequently asked questions

▸Why does the printer do nothing at all without the driver?

CAPT moves the page processing onto the computer - the printer itself has nothing to print until the driver prepares the page. That is how the model was designed, not a fault.

▸The printer vanished after a Windows update.

A known CAPT habit. Reinstalling the same package brings it back - see the steps above.

▸I have the LBP2900B - is the driver the same?

Yes. The package covers both the LBP2900 and the LBP2900B.

▸Windows says the printer is not supported.

Run the installer anyway - the official package, installed in the right order (installer first, cable second), usually works on Windows 11.
