Monitors drivers
Monitor drivers are a small but useful category: INF files that tell Windows the display's exact name, its supported modes and its color profile. A monitor works without one - with one, the system knows everything about it.

About monitors drivers
When this matters: the display list shows "Generic PnP Monitor", the native resolution or refresh rate is missing, colors are visibly off. The maker's INF package - listed here under Hardware IDs like MONITOR\XXX0000 - registers the correct modes and profile.
If an external monitor is not detected at all, the monitor driver is almost never the cause: look at the graphics driver, the cable and the selected input on the monitor itself.
Frequently asked questions
- Windows says "Generic PnP Monitor" - is that bad?
- Not harmful, but with the monitor's INF driver the system gets the exact resolutions, refresh rates and color profile. For color-critical work the difference is visible.
- My monitor's 144 Hz mode is missing - will the monitor driver help?
- It may, but check the cable first (older HDMI versions cap the refresh rate) and the graphics driver settings - the cause is more often there.
- The monitor is not detected at all - should I install its driver?
- No - the monitor driver plays no part in detection. Check the cable, the input selected on the monitor, and the graphics driver.
